Disappointing Yourself

disappointment

Hello, friends!

Sometimes, you disappoint yourself. You don’t get everything done you want to or you don’t get anything done at all. And that’s okay. Sometimes you have to fail a few times-or really, a lot of times-to remember how good it feels to succeed.

Personally, I’ve been disappointing myself a lot recently. I haven’t been finding the time to write. Every time I open my story, I just let it sit there. I don’t write. My daily word count projection has been climbing. When I started the story, I set my standard of 50,000 words and I gave myself until I start college to finish it. The first word goal was 633 words per day-it’s now 837 per day. The higher it gets, the more discouraged I get and the less motivated I feel. And every day I don’t write, the higher it goes.

I’m disappointed in myself. Maybe you’re disappointed in you. But it’s still okay! There’s just a few things to remember when making goals for yourself.

Be realistic.

When setting personal goals, whether it’s for writing or exercise or whatever, know your personal limits. It’s wonderful to test yourself. But if you set the bar at the max, you may not be able to reach it for some time. Create a goal that matches you personally and as you get comfortable with it, start pushing the bar higher. This gives you new ways to challenge yourself as you go and doesn’t discourage you right off the bat.

Be flexible.

It’s possible that even with your realistic goal, you’re gonna struggle. And if you’re setting that bar real high, you’re almost definitely going to disappoint yourself. It’s important to remember that this is a personal goal and any progress you make is incredible. You can change numbers and deadlines as you need to and you’ll still be doing great.

Be hopeful.

It’s impossibly easy to disappoint yourself and that can be embarrassing and disheartening. Even so, remember that you are totally capable of accomplishing your task. Always keep trying. You haven’t failed until you’ve given up. Keep up the faith and work towards that goal, always remembering why you decided to achieve it!
