A photo of two
People, and a good day that
Left a wounded smile.
Hello, friends! Was this a lazy response? Maybe. But I love a good haiku.
Today’s prompts were: wounded, a good day, and an old photograph. I wanted to do something longer about the story of finding the photograph but then I thought about poetry. The idea of pain coming from a memory is familiar to me, and is generally an emotional experience, and where better to find emotion than in a poem? As I was writing free verse, the challenge of a haiku felt appropriate. Haikus seem kinda easy because they’re 17 syllables. But trying to fit a story, especially a good one, into those syllables can be a challenge, especially when you have specific words to use. And the format kind of changed the story too. At first, I wanted it to feel sad. But the way the syllables worked with “wounded” brought “smile” to my mind, and I decided to make it bittersweet instead.
Also, haikus are short and I have finished exactly none of my homework today so I’m going to get on that finally. Post a response to the prompt if you feel inspired.
That’s all for now. Thanks for reading!
