Writing Challenge Day 2: Shadow Play & Who Are You?

“Who are you?” I ask, hands clenched in the folds of my dress, as if they can protect me from this mystery.

Her image  brightens a little, almost like a smile, except there is no mouth on her ashen face. “Easy. I’m your shadow.” Her voice is high and lilting, dreamlike.

I wonder if I am asleep. “How?”

The figure moves toward me, but there isn’t a menacing air to her. As she moves, I observe her more and more. She has the shape and fullness of a being, but no marks upon her gray skin. And her skin can’t really be described as such; she looks as if someone built her from the texture of grain–not the material, merely its essence. It isn’t hard to believe she may truly be a shadow. She steps around me, her feet not really touching the ground, but rather sliding through the shadows on it. The air she passes chills in her presence.

“Where are we?” I question.

“The Shadow Realm,” she replies.

“What is that?”

“It’s like your world, only darker.”

The scene looks the same as the world I’m used to, but she’s right. Trees and people have grown dark gray. The earth itself is faded, and the objects and beings surrounding me cast no shadows, having become the shadows themselves. I  wonder how these shadows live, if they even do at all. My shadow is the only one who seems to possess thought or words, her figure brighter than the others. A thousand questions stir in my mind. But as the walks, gliding, almost dancing, and the sensation of light, warmth without brightness, radiates from her, a mischievousness emerges. And I begin to wonder how the shadows play.

Hello, friends, this post is hecking late!

But I wrote it within my wakeful cycle of February 2nd so I’m saying it counts. Today’s prompts were: alchemy, shadow play, and who are you? I used a combination of the last two. This prompt actually spurred a little memory of a story I’ve always been working to write correctly. It tells the story of a girl who learns she can manipulate shadows. Despite whether or not this scene will make it into the final work, it was fun to write and little dip of inspiration back into a story I’ve been holding off on.

I know, I lowkey lied about the video posting but I swear it’ll be soon and I will link it to the blog that follows it. Tell me what you think about today’s (?) prompts by leaving a comment!

That’s all for now. Hopefully I will get better about posting these on time. Thanks for reading!
